Many members of the University of Cincinnati Basketball team want pay back against Providence on Monday night. The first game between these two teams was a disappointing home loss and the Friars scored 89 points.
We've seen how we've got to play and we've been playing harder and tougher," Deonta Vaughn Junior star guard for the Bearcats commented on his team's recent improvement. He realizes this league match up is critical for the team's confidence and because of the competitiveness of the Big East Conference.
In the first contest between these two teams head Coach Steve Cronin said he believes his team let the game slip away. "We're going to show them the things that we could have done defensively that would have given us a chance to win the game," Coach Cronin said to the Associated Press.
He also stressed the importance of defense for this team to have a successful season. He does not have a lot of support from fans this year. Many fellow students refused to comment on the basketball team at UC because everyone is disappointed with the start to this season.
One student however does have faith in UC and what Coach Cronin is doing with the program. "I think this UC team is very young and is going through an adjustment period, said one student.
Cronin is working his best to build the program and recently signed a very talented transfer student from Oklahoma State, Ibrahima Thomas. He also signed Mike Williams a forward out of Texas two years ago. He has proven that he can sign quality names and UC is a worthy program.
Both Williams and Thomas have raw talent, strength, size, and a medium mid range jumper in their arsenal. It speaks volumes to the level of UC's program when they can sign two star forwards from two storied programs, Texas and Oklahoma State.
The recent signing Thomas, was born in Senegal and stands at an intimidating 6-11 and weighs 230 pounds. He will be eligible to start playing next January and has his junior and senior years of eligibility left.
Thomas's career high in points is 19. He accomplished this the last game of last year his freshman season. He said he chose UC over other schools because Cronin will play him at the forward position where as most schools were going to play him at center, reported by the AP.
This is a win win situation for this young man and for the team. He is expected by many analyses to be the most talented player on this young Bearcat team. In turn, he has more freedom at UC to play outside because center is the team's deepest position. They have a total of three centers on the current roster.
The future looks bright for the Bearcats but only time will tell if these young players can grow into men.
